Stockton , Durham
Famed forever for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, over recent years Stockton has changed immensely, as it has had to following the demise of the heavy industry which once predominated in the town’s economy. Major areas of redevelopment are altering its look and outlook – along the Tees there are many new office buildings for service industry companies; in 2009 the Infinity Bridge opened, a symbol of the great changes; the Tees barrage is another landmark structure recently completed; and Queen’s Campus of the University of Durham has brought new young blood to the district. And every summer the energy of the place goes into the International Riverside Festival, a long party of music, comedy, theatre and dance.
