Sevenoaks sprang up around Knole Park, a very grand stately home said to have 365 rooms, and still lived in by the Sackville family granted the place by Elizabeth I. Nowadays Sevenoaks is very much London commuter territory, with the M25 on the doorstep and excellent train services to the capital. It is noted, though for being caught in a trap where high house prices have driven out those who provide ordinary services, thus reducing service provision in the place. As well as Knole Park Sevenoaks has its ancient school, founded in the 15th century. Of late the town centre has been redeveloped somewhat, with the Bligh shopping centre now attracting good trade.
