Rye , East Sussex
Once a major port, indeed one of the original Cinque Ports, ancient storms and land reclamation mean that Rye is now a couple of miles inland, though the river Rother flowing into the bay allows fishing boats still to reach the sea. Though small, Rye has enormous charm, reflected in its attraction over the years to many writers such as Henry James, Rumer Godden, E.F. Benson and John Christopher. The often steep and always characterful byways like Mermaid Street and Watchbell Street are lined with buildings of a pleasant jumble of architectural periods from the 15th to the 18th century, though this is a living place not a relic as its thriving market and farmers’ market evidence.
