In its time Newark – once owned by Lady Godiva - has been a centre of industry, and retains many manufacturing jobs, but these days it is also a commuter town, its population feeding the nearby city of Nottingham and even London. No wonder, given the excellent transport provision here – railways north-south and east-west, the A1 and A17 roads too. The town was a thorn in Parliament’s side in the war, hence the ruination of its castle; but some older properties remain in the centre especially around the old market place – Newark still serves as a market town for the region – including the lovely Georgian town hall.
