Milton Keynes, like anything else of a radically different nature, has been the butt of plenty of jokes, in this case by people who must enjoy traffic jams. But it could be argued that Milton Keynes is the only large settlement in Britain fitted to contemporary living. Its amenities from the stadium:mk, home of the Dons, through the National Bowl, The Point entertainment complex, and Xscape indoor ski slope, are up to modern requirements. Its grid pattern is suited to car and bus use, and electronic communication, rather than horses. And the whole project benefited from seeing the errors other garden cities made before it – giving the lakes and green spaces, and the wide range of entertainment venues MK enjoys.
