Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, nestling in the South Downs, a place surrounded by beautiful countryside and with its centre equally pleasant. The town is famous for its special celebration of November 5th, and as the home of the architecturally and beerily wonderful Harveys Brewery – the two coming together in the November brew Bonfire Boy. Lewes Castle looms over the town; various medieval buildings sit alongside Georgian and Victorian structures; the Ouse is crossed by some pretty bridges (and the Phoenix); and though 1970s planners made some dents in it, the town’s old layout remains easy to see, loved by no less an expert than William Morris.
