It is hard now to imagine that Islington was once a market garden area for London, and maybe harder still to think of it as the country resort it became for a while because of its greenery, though the reputation it gained for good pubs in that era has not been lost – with some wine bars now added to the scene. Islington is now an inner city area par excellence, with a real mix of people and property. In the 80s and 90s some sections of older Georgian housing in the district were gentrified, notable among the incomers then Tony Blair, and the Victoria line has since brought a new wave of well-heeled residents.
