The heavy industry that once dominated Falkirk may have gone, but the town remains a significant one thanks to its central position: the Roman Antonine Wall came through here – some of it still to be seen. The Forth and Clyde Canal and Union Canal cross here, with the recent development of the fabulous Falkirk Wheel boat lifting device breathing life back into the network, and the town also sits on the motorway crossroads for central Scotland. All this means that the town is a major regional retail centre, activity grouped around the pleasantly characterful and pedestrianised High Street. Redevelopment and good use of its rich heritage have drawn new residents to the town in the last few years.
