Durham , Durham
Durham just as much as Oxford or Cambridge is truly a university city, its students increasing the population by more than a third in term time. The ancient cathedral and the fabulous castle are just two of the 600+ listed buildings in what is a small city, its medieval layout in the market and cathedral area great for strolling, the bar, pub, and restaurant scene very healthy thanks to a market that includes locals, academics, tourists and students. With the Wear on three sides there is plenty of water frontage, and there are even water-cruises from the city, all adding to the relaxed but youthful ambience here.
