Dumfries is a solid sort of place, famous for golf and salmon fishing, its stone houses and the old Devorgilla Bridge handsome rather than pretty. For centuries the town was at the mercy of invading English armies, but The Queen of the South has been quieter since Jacobean times – though Bonnie Prince Charlie did drop by for a while, and Burns lived out his last few years in the place, no doubt boosting the coffers of the pubs then as the students of the new multi-institutional university campus do now. They can even enjoy an evening at The Globe Inn connecting them further to the poet – it was his favourite ‘howff’ for a pint and a chat.
