Industrially Derby is famed both for massive Rolls Royce engines and delicate Crown Derby porcelain. A similar schizophrenia applies to the cityscape (city rather than town since 1977) with the dense development of older buildings like the Tudor Cathedral, the Georgian Pickford’s House Museum, and the George Inn where Bonnie Prince Charlie once called, contrasting with largely Victorian open spaces like the Arboretum, and Darley, Markeaton and Derwent Parks as havens of quiet. Less sedate is Friar Gate, the centre of Derby’s nightlife and a big draw for the students at the university; parents are more likely to make for the coffee shops and boutiques in the Cathedral Quarter.
