Berwick upon Tweed , Northumberland
A political football for centuries between England and Scotland, Berwick finally settled as English in 1482. The mighty Tweed borders the town to the south, crossed by three elegant bridges from different historical periods: the hugely impressive stone bridge with 15 arches built in 1611; the 1850 railway bridge; and the 1928 road bridge. The town walls are Elizabethan, offering an excellent walk that takes in many of the town’s sights that include some beautiful Georgian houses, the Vanbrugh-designed barracks, and the parish church, a rare architectural legacy of the Commonwealth period. LS Lowry loved Berwick, and whether the sun is shining or the North Sea crashing over the breakwater, it is easy to see why.
